Creative Transmutation is the use of creative energy for personal exploration, intuitive development, insight and healing.
I offer two classes in the art of Creative Transmutation (CT) . All CT classes are private, one-on-one classes or small, semi-private classes. Textile art-quilts are foundational in the CT classes but once learned, the process can be applied to any medium.
Once introduced to the Creative Transmutation process some want to continue as clients on a more regular basis. As an adjunct to traditional counseling.or on its own as a tool for individual introspective work I offer ongoing one-on-one Creative Transmution sessions in my studio.
Using a very limited pallet of mostly black and white textiles I teach participants to express an aspect from their life in story form. Like a mythical tale, combining fabric motifs with bits of hand drawn or traced imagery, expressions come to life in the fused collage style depicted above and to the left. This class is as much about co-creative inspiration as it is execution. While any subject is acceptable, participants are encouraged to express a visual story known only to them.... a memory or a dream, a promise, or a desire. This offers a foundation for learning to draw inspiration from within and follow co-creative guidance. This process encourages all of ones work to take on deeper, more meaningful and more individual uniqueness. No one but the creator ever has to know the source of the inspiration or the message revealed, but the piece will always hold more energy and meaning for the artist than a tale known to all.
Students are encouraged to collect a variety of fabrics with neutral motifs in shades of black & white or black & cream to bring to class along with other pale grays or soft hued over-all patterns. One yard of black fabric and one yard of white or cream fabric is also needed. Fat Quarters will be available in the studio for purchase to supplement if needed. A couple yards of fuseable web is also needed. Irons & ironing surfaces, cutting mats and scissors are provided but students are encouraged to bring any tools they are comfortable using.
This is a two day class, that runs from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. Students can bring a lunch or snack and work through the break if desired, or dine out locally. Class Fee for both days is $250.00.
About these art-quilts
The Bee Holder: Collection of the University of Houston Women's Center40"x40"
This is the first art-quilt I designed using the puzzle piecing technique I now teach in my Figurative Reflections class. The title is a play on words about beauty being in the eye of the beholder. The woman in this holds a tiny, antique stick pin in the form of a bee. Curiously as I worked on this piece I was intuitively guided to understand the symbolism of the bee and that there actually is a bee queen in mythology. As her attributes were gently and intuitively brought to my awareness it felt like a loving embrace from Spirit. This kind of experience happens in my Creative Transmutation work as I engage this co-creative dance. It is this dance I love teaching my students to embrace as they approach the messages and stories only they can express... and energies only they can transmute.
Bottom Left Image:
In Memoriam : A very personal piece this art-quilt came to assist me in dealing with the sudden and unexpected the loss of my late husband in less than twenty-four hours of my father's passing. Emerging almost a year following their passing it was not until I began this piece that I was able to fully embrace the spiritual gift they had given me in their joint departure.
Bottom Right Image:
Blue Lady with Bouquet: This piece surprised me in that once finished I intuitively heard the name of my closest friend and received the awareness that it belonged to her. Symbolically it quite accurately depicted her introspective nature, and her role as the matriarch of a family of 5 (the bouquet). A favorite of mine, this piece taught me the co-creative nature of creative transmutation that we can often do in service of others.
What is taught:
Students learn to design and draft an original pattern, translate it in fabric and complete a top, ready for quilting, but it is the personal aspect reflected in each students design that is at the heart of this two-day class.
Drawing on my counseling background, I assist students in the art of tapping into, and creatively expressing what is seeking translation. It may be an experience or emotion known to them or something completely unexpected that arises to be explored. Here is where the introspective process of trusting what arises comes in to play.
Drawing on my reiki energy-work background I assist students in letting the feelings surface and the intuitive guidance unfold. This is key to this kind of transformative expression. With a focus on expressing what is discovered, this two-day class assists in understanding and releasing blocked energy, offering healing through creative expression.
The introspective process taught in this class can later be translated in any style or medium desired. I mostly work with students wanting their work to reflect a deeper personal meaning beyond the imagery. I can also attest to the fact that ongoing healing, understanding or inspiration continues to emanate from these works as they are lived with.
Individual one-on-one classes are always offered. But I also like to do classes with small groups. For those that like to attend classes together, two to three participants at a time can be accommodated in the studio for this class.
class fee - $250.00 All drafting and design materials are included except for quilt fabric and fusible web. As with all my Creative Transmutation classes homework is required.
